Optimal Outsourcing Strategies for iPlanet Portal Server Software
As the workplace becomes increasingly distributed, employees need
to access resources inside their companies from home, from
customer sites, and from kiosks at airports and hotels. Partners,
vendors, and suppliers need up-to-date access to specific information
for which they are allowed access-- order forecasts, for example.
Sun's iPlanetTM Portal Server enables
secure, Internet-based remote access to company resources by
authenticated users anywhere that a JavaTM
technology-enabled Web browser is available.
iPlanet Portal Server provides several different mechanisms
for accessing company data once a user has been authenticated
and given granted to their Web-based desktop or "Webtop:"
-
Applications provided by iPlanet Portal Server software
can be invoked from the desktop to allow access to functions
like file browsing and Web-based e-mail interfaces.
Data is kept secure though iPlanet's authentication
and encryption mechanisms.
-
Client Software can be automatically downloaded
from the Webtop to
provide access to applications through X Window System,
Citrix, and pcAnywhere facilities. Forgot your PowerPoint presentation
back at the office? Deliver it to your customers from your
office PC through your customer's Web browser.
-
Internet Protocols can be proxied through iPlanet
Portal Server's Netlet facility. For users who wish to use
their favorite client software (like a mail client) on their
remote PC or workstation, iPlanet Portal Server can be configured
to securely tunnel arbitrary protocols-- like IMAP and SMTP--
across the Internet to the company's server.

iPlanet Portal Server users have secure Internet access from any
Java technology-enabled Web browser to
their company resources through provided applications, Web-based client
software, and through their own favorite applications.
The broad set of facilities provided by iPlanet Portal Server
software is compelling-- but how does a small- or medium-sized company
take advantage of these capabilities when their IT staff is
stretched thin, or their core competencies do not include
hosting UNIX servers and configuring Internet services?
Lone EagleTM Systems has developed
a strategy that enables
Application Service Providers (ASPs) to deliver services
based on iPlanet Portal Server to their customers without
burdening them with the details of supporting complex software
configurations and servers to support them-- enabling
customers to focus on their core business, and providing
a way for service providers to better serve their customers.
By deploying software and servers in
an ASP environment, and serving real customers, Lone Eagle Systems
has paved the way for ASPs to deploy optimal outsourcing strategies
with iPlanet Portal Server.
